CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND EQUATIONS
Thursday, August 17, 2023 8:35 PM

• CHEMICAL REATIONS AND EQUATIONS
○ PHYSICAL CHANGE : the changes in which no new substances
are formed. eg- melting of wax, tearing paper etc.
○ CHEMICAL CHANGE : the change in which a new substance
with different properties and nature is formed. eg- making of
curd from milk, rusting of iron. etc.
Characteristics of chemical change: chemical changes can be
confirmed by one or all of these characteristics of a chemical
change-
○ evolution of heat
○ change in color
○ change in temperature
○ change in state

○ CHEMICAL REACTION
chemical changes in which the substances react to form
entirely new substances with different properties.
REACTANTS : the original substances that take part in a
chemical reaction.
example- 2Ag + Cl2 = 2AgCl (here, Ag is the reactant)

CHEMICAL EQUATION

the symbolic representation of a chemical equation using
symbols and formulas.

BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION
an equation in which the elements have same number of
atoms on both the sides of an equation.
example-
CHARACTERSTICS OF CHEMICAL REACTION

, FORMATION OF PRECIPITATE ( in some reactions )
a solid substance that is formed after a chemical reaction.
example- yellow precipitate is formed when lead nitrate reacts
with potassium iodide.

CHANGE IN COLOR
there is a change in color of the reacting species of a chemical reaction.
example- change of the anklet's color rom silver to black.

CHANGE IN STATE
some chemical changes are accompanied by change in state of the
reactant. example- burning of magnesium ribbon, here, magnesium
ribbon changes into ashes from solid state after burning.

CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE
changes in temperature are often seen during a chemical reaction.
example- reaction between quick lime (CaO) and water H2O

EVOLUTION OF GAS
evolution of gas is seen in some chemical reactions. example- Zinc
reacts with hydrochloric acid and produces zinc chloride and hydrogen
gas.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTION

COMBINATION DECOMPOSITIO DISPLACEMENT DOUBLE
REACTION N REACTION REACTION DISPLACEMENT
REACTION

COMBINATION REACTION
a reaction in which two or more than two elements or compounds
combine to form a new product.
example- 2Mg+O2 = 2MgO + heat
note- combination reaction is an exothermic reaction as it releases
