Hoofdstuk 5 ‘Geheugen’ (Psychologie een inleiding, KT1)5.1 Wat is het geheugen?
Geheugen = Elk systeem (van een mens, een dier of een apparaat) dat informatie
codeert, opslaat en terughaalt.
Informatieverwerkingsmodel = Een cognitieve benadering van het geheugen, die de
nadruk legt op de wijze waarop informatie systematische verandering ondergaat bij
het coderen, opslaan en terughalen ervan.
De essentiële functies van het geheugen:
1. Coderen = De eerste elementaire functie van het geheugen. Heeft te maken met
het omzetten van informatie in een vorm die het beste in het geheugensysteem
past.
2. Opslaan = De tweede elementaire functie van het geheugen. Heeft te maken met
het lokaliseren en weer in het bewustzijn terugbrengen van informatie uit het
geheugen.
3. Terughalen = De derde elementaire functie van het geheugen. Heeft te maken
met het lokaliseren en weer in het bewustzijn terugbrengen van informatie uit
het geheugen.

De drie stadia van geheugen:
1. Sensorisch geheugen
2. Werkgeheugen
3. Langetermijngeheugen
Sensorisch geheugen = Het eerste van de drie geheugenstadia, waarin de
sensorische indrukken van stimuli korte tijd worden bewaard of geregistreerd; ook
wel sensorisch register genoemd. (Denk aan beelden, geluiden, geuren, texturen.)
(De belangrijkste taak van het sensorisch geheugen is deze stroom van sensaties net
zo lang vast te houden totdat je hersenen hebben besloten welke informatie jouw
aandacht verdient.
