The Government of India Act, 1935 (The Indian Act of
1935

This Act was the longest and the last Constitutional reform
introduced in India by the British. It was the outcome of
the Simon Commission (1927), Nehru Committee Report
(1928), the 14 points of Jinah , the Three Roundtable
Conferences(1930-1932), the Communal Award and the
Poona Pact (1932).
*Some of its main provisions were as follows:
1. This Act recommended for a Federation of all the
provinces of British-Indian territories and the Princely
States. However, this scheme failed as more than half of
the Princely states never agreed to join this Federation.
2. It proposed for bicameral Federal Legislature. Out of
the 2 Houses, Council of States (Today’s Rajya Sabha)
would be Upper House and permanent body whereas
Federal Assembly (Today’s Lok Sabha) would be Lower
House and would be elected after every 5 years.
3. It also mentioned about the Provincial Legislature
where it provided for unicameral legislature (one House)
