Politics
Main Points:

influential post-WWII texts.

Readings:

Morgenthau, H.J. (1948) Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace,
4th edn (New York: Alfred A. Knopf), pp. 3-14, 20-22, 25-33. [other editions: TColl/

vol. 2, no. 2, pp. 157-180.

Classical Realism
Liberalism :

Liberalism understands war ‘negatively’ - war as the product of an ontological
absence, as the product of something that does not yet exist in sufficient amount.

Angell - war reflects a lack of understanding/education that will eventually be
eliminated through a process of moral learning

War happens because people have not thought hard enough, there are not enough
republican states, there is not enough economic interdependence, there is not enough
international law, and there are not enough democratic/liberal states.

Morgenthau - key realist for the discipline of IR

Born in 1904 into a Jewish family in Germany

First career as a lawyer in Germany, but emigrated to the US in 1937 as a result of the
rise of Nazism in Germany.
