The selection, written by Kiera Cass
1 What is the connection between the title and the book? Explain in detail with examples from the
book. How does the title relate to the main character/s?
- The connection between the title and the book is that it's called the selection because the book is
about a selection of 35 girls who come to the palace so that the crown prince can cause the right girl
for himself. They all get to know the prince and he gets to know them, but when he feels like the girl
doesn't fit with him he sents her home. At the end of the book there are only 5 girls remaining in the
palace.

2 Characterization: What kind of person is/are the main character/s? In what ways does that
become clear to you as a reader? Explain with examples from the book.
- The main character is America Singer a five (all the people got rankings in the book). She is a girl
from my age and she has a boyfriend that nobody knows about. When she got a letter telling that
she could sign up for the selection she didn't want it at first but her boyfriend and parents told her
that she needed to try-out. She is a very sweet girl that doesn't want a luxurious live so she is really
nice to her maids and she has a really good connection with Maxon from the beginning.

3 Who is your favourite character in the book and why? Explain with details of what he/she is
saying / doing in the book.
- My favourite character is America cause you get to know here really well and she didn't want to get
with Maxon first but only wanted to be his friend and help him pick the right girl. But eventually she
started to fall in love with him and I think that's really cute.

4 Development: In what ways does the main character change or develop during the story? How do
you notice that as a reader? Give detailed examples from the book.
- She changes from a poor girl with the ranking 5 to a girl who lives in the palace with a ranking 3.
you notice that really well because that's what the whole story is about. Her personality doesn't
really change during the story, she stays the same sweet girl that really cares for other people.

5 Conflict: What is the most important emotional conflict that the main character becomes involved
in? How does the writer end the conflict? Explain.
- The most important emotional conflict is that she falls in love with Maxon even to she didn't want
to at first. She started to feel more of a connection with him and he tells her that he really want to
be with her but wants to give her time to find out what she really wants. At the end she decides that
she really wants to be with him.

6 Ending: Is there an open or closed ending to the book? How did that make you feel as a reader?
- open ending. At the end ofo the story Maxon had chosen 5 girls who stayed at the palace and could
possibly by his future wife. There are 6 books in this serie, I am currently reading the second book
where 1 girl remains and becomes his wife. The open ending made me want to read the second
book because I wanted to know how the story developed.

7 Setting: In what ways are time and place made important in the book? In what way is that
important to the story? Any unexpected setting details? (e.g. A war story in an unexpected setting?)
- Time is important because the prince needed to chose the right girl in a given time. But it isn't the
most important because a lot of time passes but you don't read about it. The place is more
important because it all happens in the palace because that's where the prince lives.

8 Theme: What do you think the writer wants to express with the story? What does he/she want to
explain? What is his / her message? Give details to support your answer.
