Course Description:
The study of money and banking is essentially the study of the role and function of monetary aggregates in the
economy, and the study of financial markets - that is, the money, bond and stock markets and their
interrelationships. The effects of the financial system on the economy are determined by the institutional
framework under which that system operates. We will look at how government institutions and regulatory
bodies influence the behavior of financial institutions, financial market participants, and thus attempt to learn
the interplay among the financial system, the monetary authority (Bank of Canada), and government economic
policies, and their effects on economic activity in the macroeconomy. This course therefore develops a keen
understanding of the financial system in Canada as well as in other major developed economies, and the very
important link between that financial system and the rest of the economy.

, Lecture Notes and Other Announcements:
The lectures will be delivered in-person for ALL sections. Lecture section 2 will also be
recorded by the WebOption AuRA automatic lecture capture system, and the recording
will be provided to students in ALL sections. Students are expected to check the
Quercus course page for postings of all other course material.
Evaluation and Grading:

Assignment 10% Monday, Dec 4th
Midterm 40% In-person (TBA as soon as booked)
Final Exam 50% In-person during the Final exam period
The mid-term exam covers the material in the first part of the course while the
final exam covers the material from the entire course.
NOTE: Any student that wrote the midterm AND whose score on the final is
higher than what they received on the midterm will have the weight of the
midterm exam shifted to the final exam.
Policy on Missed Assignments/Examinations:
LATE assignments will NOT BE ACCEPTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO MAKE-UP MIDTERM EXAM. If you miss the
midterm with LEGITIMATE reason, you can request to have the weight of the midterm
transferred to the final exam. YOUR REQUEST MUST BE SUPPORTED BY PROPER
DOCUMENTATION AND MUST BE SUBMITTED WITHIN TWO WEEKS AFTER THE
MIDTERM IS WRITTEN.

incapacitation that the illness or injury has upon the student’s academic functioning and the
