MECH 371 Lab #1 Main Body complete solution Concordia University
1. Objective:
Gain a strong familiarization with the principle components that form Closed Loop DC Motor
System-Modules and its accompanying instruments, and calibrating the sensors,
potentiometers, and amplifiers.

2. Introduction:
The goal of the laboratory is to become familiar with classical feedback control systems, in
specific, an electromechanical angular position control system using a DC motor, while being
able to measure performance parameters in the time and sinusoidal frequency domain. This
type of system is being studied due to wide application and because of the ability to visualize
the overshoot. The system is represented by the following block diagram:

Figure 1: Basic DC Motor Position Control System [1]

, Where the above designations are:

150H – Input Potentiometer – translates desired angular position into a proportional voltage, +-
150 degree operating range.
150K – Output Potentiometer – translates angular position of flywheel shaft into a
proportional voltage, continuous 360 degree operating range.
150A – Operational Amplifier – reference comparator compares output and input voltage
which represent desired positions of the flywheel and generates the difference between them;
unity-gain summing-inverter type.
150B – Top Attenuator – adjusts error signal, knobs used for gain adjustment.
150C – Pre-Amplifier – adjusted error signal amplification.
150D – Servo Amplifier – takes adjusted error and drives the motor in a sense as to reduce the
error
150F – DC Motor
150X – Gear Reduction Unit – provides amplification of motor torque as well as creates a speed
reduction
PS150E – Power Supply – provides +-15 volts DC

Refer to lab manual for detailed description of each component.
