Unit 5

Examine principles, values and skills which underpin meeting the care and support needs of
individuals
In this coursework I will be discussing the importance of meeting individual care and support
needs, as well as discussing the value and skills that link to individual care and support
needs, I will be explaining the different needs of two service users with different situations.

A1: promoting equality and diversity and preventing discrimination.

Equality is a way of ensuring that individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and
equally and with no less advantages and every individual has the opportunity to make the
most of their lives. Making sure everyone is given equality of opportunity, no matter the
background, therefore care should be provided for their specific needs including areas of
race, gender, religion or disability. Equality is a professional working in health and social
care should always treat all patients should always equally and cater to their needs, making
sure the services are accessible for all, This is important because all employees should be
encouraged to value the diversity and respect the attributes that make people different this
will ensure that everyone gets treated with dignity and respect. It is crucial to have good
equality and diversity practices to ensure that the health and social care services are fair for
individuals and accessible to all and that all individuals and service users are treated in the
same way regardless of who or what they are or their lifestyle or background. The equality
act is a good example of promoting equality, The Equality Act 2010 prohibits all employers,
service providers and providers of education, from discriminating against, harassing or
victimising individuals with protected characteristics and any individuals who has been
harassed or discriminated against defined by the equality act can take claim to court.

Diversity can be described as being ‘different’ this could be referred to as their ethnicity,
religion, age, gender, culture and this could also include having a range of different qualities
in your personality, skills or attributes all the things that build up a person's characteristics.
Good equality and diversity practices make sure that all health and social care services are
accessible to all no matter their lifestyle and that everyone is treated the same way
regardless of who they are. It is also about what makes an individual unique, this can include
your background, lifestyle, experiences and other factors that makes people different from
each other and who they are. Having a diverse community in general means that there will
be a wide range of individuals with different perspectives because they all have different
experiences throughout their lives. Diversity in health and social care shows that people care
about appreciating different cultures and backgrounds, respecting their current beliefs and
values. This is really important in the health and social care setting as it is vital as a doctor or
a nurse you need to be knowledgeable about taking care of patients who are of a variety of
backgrounds. It is about providing the best care for patients, by making sure all aspects are
represented and taken into account.
