Summary:
The goal of this experiment is to synthese polystyrene. This was performed via a
cationic polymerization reaction where a reaction of styrene and SnCl 2 as initator
occurred. For analysation of the product an IR-spectrum was made. With the
results of the IR-spectrum it can be concluded that polystyrene was made. The
yield of this synthesis was 36 %.

Inleiding
Bij dit experiment is er een kationische polymerisatie reactie uitgevoerd. Hierbij
wordt een methyleen chloride omgezet tot polystyreen door gebruik te maken
van styreen en SnCl2 .




Reactiemechanisme




Werkwijze
In een reageerbuis (1) is er 40 ml (0,63 mol) droge methyleen chloride gedaan
en in een andere reageerbuis (2) is er 30 ml (0,47 mol) methyleen chloride
gedaan. De buizen werden in een ijsbad afgekoeld tot 0 oC. In reageerbuis (2)
werd 0,9 ml (0,000076 mol) SnCl2 geïnjecteerd. Vervolgens is er 6,5 ml (0,00566
mol) styreen geïnjecteerd in reageerbuis (1). (Alle stappen zijn gedaan terwijl de
reageerbuizen in het ijsbad zaten) Er is 4 ml van reageerbuis (2) in reageerbuis
(1) geïnjecteerd. De buis heeft 10 minuten in het ijsbad gestaan. Er is 100 ml
methanol toegevoegd aan reageerbuis (1) om het polymeer te precipiteren.
Vervolgens is er een büchnertrechter gebruikt en hierbij is nog 10 ml methanol
toegevoegd om de gevormde stof te wassen. Hierna is alle vaste stof verzameld
en heeft het in de vacuüm oven gestaan voor 30 min. Er is een IR-spectrum
gemaakt van het monster.
