L.Barlow A2 Classical Civilisations
Sculpture
Aristodikos Kouros
- The word “aristodikos” is inscribed within the base which roughly translates as
aristocrat.
- 1.95m
- Made as a grave marker for an Athenian Aristocrat
- Superior to previous Kouroi statues
- Head much smaller and the proportion of torso were accurate
- Unlike the New York Kouros the muscular detail is moulded rather than etched.
- Abdominal muscles are very prominent/realistic and the chest and arm muscles are
also more defined.
- Legs are well proportioned
- Knees are very detailed
- First kouros with significantly different style of hair
- Whilst still beaded it is no longer long and straight down the back of the neck for
support
- Rather it is shorter and up on the top of the head
- More of a realistic haircut
- No telephone ear
- Arms slightly outstretched away from the body. Due to the limitations of the marble
used, support structures attach the arms to the body
- The proportions of the waist and torso have developed to show a more realistic human
figure
- Relatively standard pose
- Woodford; the Aristodikos Kouros makes the Anavyssos Kouros look “like an inflated
balloon”
• Most realistic Kouros in relation to being most similar to true human form.
• Best Kouros made in terms of strength and structure shown through gaps between
limbs
