Shakespeare originally portrays Lady Macbeth as a strong, Machievellan woman, but the
domineering evil of her ambition and her violent removal of her femininity soon overwhelms
her as her guilt overcomes her suppression of emotion, ultimately leading to her tragic
suicide. Shakespeare disturbs the audience through the subversion of typical Jacobean
woman characteristics in Lady Macbeth to warn them against rebellion and flatter King
James I.
In our first introduction to Lady Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 5, she takes on the role of a
Machiavellian villainess when she says “thy letters have transported me beyond/this
ignorant present, and I feel now / The future in the instant”: she is excessively ambitious
and even in this act verbally challenges and disrupts the Great Chain of Being. During
Jacobean society, this was frowned upon and order was valued. Her use of the noun
“transported” also suggests that the supernatural prophecies have physically moved Lady
