Unit 4 – Impact of the use of IT on business systems

P6 - Produce a proposal for an IT-enabled improvement to a business system

Proposal:
My idea for the proposal would include the already existing ATM machines that can be found around
every single city, town, village and metropolis. The idea is that all ATM machines could be equipped
with an NFC scanner and an Iris scanner that would allow people take money out by simply scanning
their eyes or tapping their phones on to the ATM machines for higher security and easier access to
their money and accounts.

Why is it necessary?
If we make a quick calculation of the number of people using ATM machines to take a small or larger
amount out, we can really appreciate the usefulness of NFC and Iris scanners. At least 20-40% of the
people living in the UK rely on ATM machines on an every day basis. That’s well over 15 million
people countrywide. Allowing these users to take money out in a more secured environment
involving easier and simple steps in order to access their accounts is very important and useful for
the business. This would basically enable people to just go up to a machine, tap their phone or scan
their eyes, type in the amount they wish to take out and that would be it. Less than 2 minutes on
average. This would also decrease the queues that sometimes happen in shopping centres and at the
front of banks on busy Fridays and weekends.

The banks and business having these well-improved ATM machines would also help them generate
more profits as they would allow people to access their money faster.

Costs
The cost of a new built ATM machine would not be much, but the sensors would increase the overall
price of an ATM by a little bit. If consider the fact that large amount of high quality NFC and Iris
scanners can be exported for a cheap price from China, we really are mostly talking about software
developments that would make up the high costs of implementing this idea into ATM machines.

Large companies offering high quality sensors could deliver thousands of sensors for £4-7/ sensor
(including both Iris and NFC). For all the (1)ATMS available, the 70,000 ATMS that are available in UK
would cost £420,000 to be implemented with these new sensors.

A new software for these ATMs and adding the functionality to already existing mobile phone
applications (on all platforms) wold approximately cost between £20-40,000 for banks. Maintenance
afterwards could slightly increase in order to maintain secure payments and access to accounts.

Inputs and outputs
Input
If Barclays would implement these sensors, their customers would only require their phones to be
with them all the times, not requiring to have bank cards with them all the time. Since all people
carry their phones with them, this seems to be a more comfortable decision for consumers to make
in order to take money out of ATM machines. Their Eyes would also be with customers at all times,
so if they would forget their cards and phones at home, they would still be able to access their
accounts and make a quick shopping.
