Unit 22 Developing Computer Games
In this assignment, I will be talking about different impacts of computer games on our current
society. I will be describing different good and bad points/impacts of computer games.
P1 - Explain the impact of computer Games on Society.
-Games in society:
Concerns:
-Excess playing time
It doesn’t really what type of game we are talking about when we point out to excessive playing
times with games. All type of games can make people sit down for hours and stare at a screen
without making any major movement. This isn’t healthy for a number of reasons as there will be a lot
of pressure on eyes as well as useful time can be wasted by playing for hours. It can disturb work,
personal life as well as education. The maximum hours recommended to play limits at 2-3 hours
however today’s generation tends to ignore this and play games well over 5-6 hours or sometimes
even as long as a full day.
-Social isolation
Social isolation means that someone isn’t socialising/meeting with other people in real life. Social
isolation tends to be very common in the ages of 12-21 as young people have more time for studies
that they can choose to simply spend on playing games. Older people also have a high chance on
getting isolated from the real world, but there are number of facts that can make avoid them from
doing so such as work. It is true that people can meet with other people online in-games, but that is
clearly not the same as going out to meet with a close friend to perhaps have some good time
together.
-Cost
Gaming can be a very expensive hobby or a lifestyle for more addictive gamers. Bigger and average
titles tend to cost between £30-60 and these are only games. Some games may also feature in-game
purchases meaning that additional money can be spent on different maps, features etc. These extra
functionalities can go from as low as £0.60 up to £200. People sometimes cannot afford to buy bigger
titles but sometimes they take the risks of buying them anyway, not thinking about the debt and
other trouble they can get into.
-Separation from reality
It’s not really a problem to have a fun side of life and some relaxed time with games, but some
people take it on a whole new level by not connecting back to the real world. This can cause a lot of
problems in the long and even in short term on a person’s life. They can feel stressed or feel bullied
as well as they can be very shy when interacting with real-life people. This can affect a so called
“gamers” life in a really bad way that could require a psychologist in the future.
-Education
Students who tend to be “hardcore gamers” (addictive players) usually do not focus on their studies;
therefore they are more likely to get really bad grades that could not only affect them really badly in
the short term, but also in the long term. Students who spend more time on playing with games than
on studying usually ends up quiet badly. There could be a lot of arguing between the student-
teacher-parent as the latter two would want the student to become smarter while the student would
only want to focus on playing games and enjoying the ‘present’.

Benefits:
-Hand-eye coordination
Playing a lot of games isn’t all that bad after all. It could help people have a better hand-eye
coordination and reflexes that could help them to get skills that may be required for everyday-life as
well as specific jobs. People who play a lot usually know the keyboard/controller buttons exactly so
they do not have to keep their eye on it and therefore they can focus on more important things that
are happening on the screen in front of them. These can be used for simple things such as driving.
When driving, the drivers usually don’t look at the pedals and the gears, they immediately know
where each of those are without the need of looking down and so having more chance on crashing
into something.
-Brain training
Not all games have to be educational in order to make players smarter. Games may include realistic
physics or real life stories that are being presented realistically inside of games that can make people
learn a lot without even realising. A good example for this is simulators and puzzle, strategy games. A
driving simulator may help people learn more about physics and the way a car can handle different
situations in different conditions. Puzzle games can help people have faster solving skills and better
reaction times on key things while strategy games can help people solve things relatively simpler and
faster. Strategy games can also help solve real life business issues as the key point of those games are
to use strategy against and for someone, something.
-Thinking and strategy skills
As mentioned above, games can make people think more straight forward and earn skills that they
otherwise would not be able to or perhaps could but much later during their life. Thanks to games,
players are able to solve problems much quicker in a much more efficient way. Tasks and other things
could be broken down into little parts and put in an importance order and then be solved in that
order. This can help people manage real life tasks and situations much better.
-Future impact
The future impact of playing games for long hours can be both good and bad in the long and short
terms. In short terms, people could earn a lot of skills that they otherwise could earn by experiencing
real life situations that would always turn out well for them. In long term, people could have eye-
sight issues that could affect their everyday lives by not seeing so clearly, this could affect their work
and overall their whole life. People could become weaker and gain more fat that could make them
shy in real life as well as it could affect their health.
Overall, I think that playing games with limits can have a positive effect on people’s lives as it could
help them gain a different and useful set of skills and mindset that they could use in real-life
situations.
-‘Mainstream’ application development
Thanks to games, mainstream application have developed rapidly in the past few years. They have
gotten a much better visual experience. Visual experience isn’t all, they have got a lot of new
features that people could use more efficiently. This is due to the fact that some functions were
available in games as settings or other formats, and so these have been implemented for applications
too. The development of games and applications has become a bit more simpler now as each
different platform offers a lot of helpful resources as well as large communities in forum formats that
offers a lot of help for existing developers and beginners.
