Tesco is a famous UK supermarket that has stores in over 11 countries world-wide and has
already began branching out into other markets to acquire profits, these markets include
the retailing of books, clothing, electronics, furniture, toys, petrol, software, financial
services, telecoms and internet services this is due to its gargantuan size as it is a global
business it has the power to move into other markets and open branches in more countries
in coming years.
Recruitment and selection: Recruitment is the process a business follows to attract
applicants to apply for a job and then to choose the best person for the job. Selection is the
decision-making process by the business by checking CV’s and references to know whether
an applicant is worthy of their job, it is very imperative that the business gets this right, so
that they employ the right type of people.
Before the recruitment process can begin the business needs to first plan its recruitment, in
other words they need to decide whether they need to recruit, whether its internally or
externally and how and where to advertise to get the right applicants and so, they check the
number and skills of their current employees to meet present and future need for
employees. Recruitment planning holds significant importance due to its purpose being to
identify the goals for a particular role, because it makes the job analysis more specific.
Tesco as well as many other supermarkets need to recruit staff for many reasons, including
expansion for the new chains, staff sick or paternity, maternity leave or for seasonal
demand which is usually the most common cause for recruiting. Sometimes Tesco need to
recruit immediately due to seasonal demand and for gaps in their workforce, so they need
to fill the gaps to meet their workforce supply shortage by increasing their demand for
candidates. Then Tesco begin putting up adverts on their site and on agencies to grab
attention which would lead candidates to agencies, job centres or their website to begin the
application process.
