Unit 13 P1 D1

P1 - identify the structure and function of biological molecules:

D1 - discuss the relationship between structure and function for
carbohydrates and lipids:

Biological molecules involve carbohydrates, lipids (triglycerides), proteins and
nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).

Carbohydrates:

The structure of the carbohydrate could look differently in different situations.
They are assembled from the elements; carbon, oxygen and hydrogen.
Carbohydrates could be in the three different forms, these are monosaccharides,
disaccharides and in the polysaccharides.

The main difference in the structure of the carb

ohydrates is whether the monosaccharide is an alpha-glucose or a beta-glucose.
This determines the function of the carbohydrate. An example of where alpha-
glucose is present is the glycogen and starch (Amylose and Amylopectin).
However, the beta-glucose makes up the chains of the cellulose molecules. The
position of the elements on the molecules alters depending on which the
molecule is (alpha or beta-glucose).

A few examples of the disaccharides which can be produced from the
condensation reaction of two monosacharides are;

Maltose: glucose + glucose

Sucrose: Fructose + glucose

Lactose: Galactose +glucose

Polysaccharides could be created from the condensation of the monosaccharides
in a long chain.
