M3- Assess the impact of changes in the global and European business environment
on a selected business.

There are numerous global changes that may potentially affect Balfour Beatty in one way or
another as is the same with European changes. Major changes are all categorised in
different sectors which are: political, economic, social, technological, environmental and
even legal aspects (PESTEL). All of these different sectors each have a different purpose to
why they are bringing change within a certain business but in this case that is Balfour Beatty.
The reason why it affects Balfour Beatty even more is because they’re not just offering
services within the areas of Europe but also expanding their services to different countries
such as Australia, India and USA. All changes made which may affect Balfour Beatty now or
in the near future are made externally therefore meaning they have no ability to reverse any
decisions nor avoid them, which could then lead to serious damages towards their
current/future plans for expansion.
I will be covering certain aspects which can impact Balfour Beatty as a result of changes
within the global and european business environment. The first key area i will be covering is
the Increasing population aspect. The reason why I have chosen this impact is because of
the expectation of the UK to increase in population of over 10 million more people within the
next 25 years.
10-million-in-25-years)
The reason why this affects Balfour Beatty is because this would require them to provide this
increasing population with more homes to live in and therefore having several more
contracts come in for facilities such as houses, flats, schools, hospitals etc.. Due to this
being in a long term aspect, Balfour Beatty as well as the government have more than
enough time to start planning for the increase by setting out projects. However, they are
lucky that the increase is not almost instantly because that means that their workload would
surprisingly go over the roof and this will cause the government who are Balfour Beatty’s
main source of income to be under scrutiny and will be under pressure which only worsens a
situation. Even with the negative point in mind, as a result of an increase in workload this
can create job vacancies due to the increase of work and this can benefit the increase in
population because it gives them a better chance to get a job regardless of what country the
population increase may be heading to. As a result of this sudden increase of population in
countries which Balfour Beatty are based in, they can get contracts from the government to
ensure that their transport services are capable of keeping up with this increase in
population. This means that they will have more projects to keep themselves busy with as
they are providing services for the public towards the transport services. Balfour Beatty have
made a clear indication of what they want to achieve by 2050 and what their major changes
would be to create a new phase during this period. They have spoken out about the
introduction of the new railways being added in for the public to use, thus leading to more
