This answer received 6/8 marks by the AQA examiners. Provides a good structure of how you should set this question out. The poems compared were 'Scaffolding'- Seamus Heaney and 'Yours'- Daniel Hoffman
2023 AQA Unseen Poetry
Both Heaney and Hoffman present how everything belongs together through images of togetherness
and unity therefore suggesting there are strong feelings on how each individual in a couple is meant
for each other. Hoffman creates this imagery by saying, ‘What is an island without a sea’ This natural
imagery implies that nature together complements each other metaphorically representing how the
sea is the backbone of an island like it is for a couple to stay together which provides resilience.
Heaney presents strength through togetherness through couplets. The enjambment in the lines like
‘we may let the scaffold fall (enjambment) confident…’. This shows how the lines flow onto the other
line because they are meant to be together and when they are together, it creates a sense of
strength as the first line does not make sense without the second line.
The profound difference is through the contrast of nature in ‘Yours’ and the manmade artificial motif
in ‘Scaffolding’.
