Explain how continuing development of staff
influences practice in settings.
The following report will cover explanation for varying types of training which health and
social care staff undergo as CPD and how it influences practice in health and social care
settings.
Moving and handling training
The moving and handling of people is a regular task in health and social care, which if not
done safely, can cause serious injury to service users and staff. When members of staff (e.g.
nurses, physiotherapists, carers) receive ongoing training throughout their career on moving
and handling, it ensures that they do not forget important details which could endanger
themselves, the service users and even others around them (HSE, 2017).
Fire training
CPD in fire training is essential as it is important that all members of staff know alternative
routes to escape the fire if the nearest one is unavailable for any reason. It influences
practice because members of staff are a lot more knowledgeable on what to do in case of a
fire, if it has been repeated and/or updated often (e.g. how to alert others, how to help
immobile service users/visitors) (Healthy working lives, 2016).
First aid training
Continuing development of staff in first aid is crucial as if an individual hasn’t used their
knowledge or skills on first aid in a while, they may not know how to accurately and safely
perform first aid – even if they have been qualified to do so. Keeping skills on first aid fresh
in the mind is important in keeping patients’ safe as well as other individuals’ who are around
the setting (e.g. visitors, other members’ of staff) as help may not be available quick enough,
and the use of first aid may be crucial.
Medication training
Medication training is for healthcare professionals with the responsibility of receiving, storing,
administering and disposing of medication. Medication administration is an essential and key
area of user/patient care. Medication can be dangerous when misused but when used
effectively is a very powerful tool to alleviate symptoms and improve or prolong a person’s
life. Healthcare workers are not only responsible for the safe delivery of medication but also
upholding dignity, encouraging independence and respecting choices the service
user/patient makes. Ensuring they are receiving CPD in medication ensures that they remain
to store, administer and dispose of medication safely and effectively (Health and Safety
Group, 2017).
