There are 2 ways in which crime can be recorded.
Crime recorded by the police (Home office) and
information that is collected in the crime survey for
England and Wales (CSEW). This is formally known as
the British Crime survey.
Primary data is information that you gather directly
from original sources by getting information straight
from a person who is directly involved or affected by
the subjected type of data. For example, if you conduct
a survey or interview people to collect data, that's
primary data. It's collected firsthand and directly from
the source. Secondary data is data that someone else
has already collected and you're using it for your own
purposes. For instance, when you use information from
books, articles, or databases that were created by
others, it's secondary data. It's not directly from the
source but from someone else's work. You still must get
the data by acquiring the books and sources, but the
information has already been compiled by someone
else, all you are doing is picking out what you require
from the data you have at your disposal.
There are 2 types of data that used to process the
information that is then recorded, quantitative and
qualitative types of data. Qualitative Data is typically
descriptive. It's non-numeric and focuses on the
qualities, attributes, or properties of something.
Qualitative data is often used to capture information
that cannot be easily measured with numbers for
example emotions of someone which cannot be
