1984 | Book 3, Chapter 1
Summary:
Winston describes his experience after leaving Mr Charrington's shop. He explains how he went to a
prison with some prole criminals, met a woman who might have been his mother, before moving to
the Ministry of Love and talking to the poet Ambleforth and his friend Parsons.

1. What atmosphere is immediately established in this chapter and how?
 Isolation - "He did not know where he was … there was no way of making certain"
 Lack of time adds to isolation and confusion - "if it had been morning when he was
brought here, it would be afternoon; or if it had been afternoon, then it would be
midnight."
 Dread - "In this place you could not feel anything, except pain and foreknowledge of
pain."

2. What have we missed? What has not been described to us? Why is this significant?
 We have missed Winston's journey from Mr Charrington's shop to the Ministry of Love
- "There was a dull aching in his belly. It had been there ever since they had bundled
him into the closed van and driven him away."
o It is a vague memory for Winston
o As the experience is viewed through the eyes of Winston, the reader
experiences his confusion as he is trapped in his cell
 It is also not known how and when Winston was moved from the "ordinary prison or a
temporary lock-up" to his present cell
o Further adding to confusion
