VERHAAL
Het verhaal begint op een ochtend in februari 1933. De arbeider Andreas Egger, een
eenvoudige man die we een leven lang volgen, probeert de stervende geitenhoeder
Johannes Kalischka (ook Hörnerhannes genoemd) te redden en draagt hem op zijn rug over
een drie kilometer lang besneeuwd bergpad in de richting van het beneden gelegen dorp. Op
de eerste bladzijden duikt het thema dood veelvuldig op, een thema dat natuurlijk prima
past in een bergachtig sneeuwlandschap. De geitenhoeder Johannes filosofeert er op los en
praat over “de Koude Vrouw” die over de berg komt en haalt wat ze nodig heeft. Hij is bang
voor de dood. Na zijn korte betoog weet de uitgemergelde geitenhoeder zich uit het houten
rek van Andreas te bevrijden en verdwijnt: “De magere gedaante voor hem werd snel kleiner,
tot ze ten slotte oploste in het ondoordringbare wit van de jachtsneeuw.” Waarom hij besloot
te vertrekken en waarnaartoe, is onduidelijk.
