,Executive summary
In 1919 the Dutch Airline KLM is founded. This abbreviation stands for 'Koninklijke
Luchtvaart Maatschappij'. KLM is the oldest international airline in the world operating
under its own name. Also the oldest international shipping service is currently being carried
out on the airline, in the name of KLM. KLM made its first flights on the Amsterdam-London
route in 1920 and always flies under her own name to London.
In that first year, when flying was something special, KLM transported 345 passengers and
25,000 kilos of mail and freight. That is a huge difference with today: KLM can carry more
than 400 passengers and 20,000 kilos of freight (including mail) on one flight with a Boeing
747. Also for comparison: in the year 2007, KLM had 25 million passengers and 610 million
kilos of cargo on board.
KLM grew rapidly and in 1924 the first plane left to Indonesia. That was a trip with which you
were on the road for weeks, now that trip takes 15 hours! Amsterdam-Batavia was already a
regular shipping service in 1929. In 1934 KLM flew over the Atlantic Ocean for the first time,
to Curaçao. As the first European company, KLM started in 1946 with a regular service across
the ocean to New York. The first Boeing 747 came in 1971.
Cooperation between airlines has not been forgotten since the 1980s. Working with other
airlines means, among other things, that you can offer your passengers more places in the
world to fly to.
In 2004, KLM took a huge step by merging with Air France and has since been part of the AIR
FRANCE KLM Group. Although the companies work closely together, KLM continues to fly
over the world under its familiar Dutch name.
The business-economic perspective of Air France-KLM has been examined. We looked at the
solvency, liquidity and profitability of the company. Air France-KLM does not score very high
in both areas, but that is not a reason to worry, because the company is slowly coming back
from a valley. So you can now look at the numbers positively because they are on the
positive side. The company is also doing less and less.
We have made a forecast for Air France-KLM for the year 2017. A forecast of the annual
figures for the coming financial year has been made here. According to our forecasts, it will
not go better financially with the Air France-KLM, but also not much worse. The profit will
not rise and the turnover will not. The forecast could not yet be compared, because the
2017 annual report has not yet been published.
