CHEM 121 Lab Report 1: Equipment, Safety, and Mass/Volume Measurement Name: Date: Experiment 1 Title: Equipment, Safety, and Mass/Volume Measurement Purpose: Observing and learning the safety aspects of working in a lab and associated devices used to ensure safety. Review various equipment used in performing experiments and how to measure volume and mass. Procedure: For the first portion of this lab we used three of the same analytical balances, triple beam balance, single pan balance. The items being weigh ed are a cell phone, a graduated cylinder and a metal cylinder. First you will get the measurement of the cell phone on the first scale. Then you will measure the graduated cylinder on the first scale. Then you will measure the metal cylinder on the first scale. You will then complete these steps three times until you have measured each item on each of the three analytical scales. The next portion is to weight these items on the triple beam scale. The triple beam scale is not used anymore due to its inaccur acy but for demonstration purposes we will weigh a metal cylinder to show the difference in accuracy. Next, you will weigh the graduated cylinder and the cellphone on two different types of a single pan scale. These type of scales are less accurate then th e analytical as well as the display on two decimal places. For the next portion of the lab we measure volume. The materials needed are10ml of water, buret, pipet, 10ml graduated cylinder, 25ml graduated cylinder, and 100ml graduated cylinder. You will also need a scale to measure the mass and a beaker to place the water in. First you need to take the temperature of the water so that you can later calculate the density of the water. Next, put the beaker on the scale and set the scale to zero. We don’t need the measurement of the beaker. Then using the buret place 10ml of water in the beaker, notate the mass. Now, calculate the percentage error by using D = M/V or V=M/D. Repeat these s teps again but use a pipet, then the 10ml graduated cylinder, 25ml graduated cylinder and 100 ml graduated cylinder. Data/Results/Calculations: Mass measurement: Analytical Scale 1 : Cell phone: 92.9738 g , Graduated cylinder:47.6204g , metal cylinder: 21.5953 g Analytical Scale 2: Cell phone:92.9738 g , Graduated cylinder: 47.6214g , metal cylinder:21.5952g Analytical Scale 3: Cell phone: 92.9748 g , Graduated cylinder: 47.6219 g , metal cylinder: 21.5957 g Triple beam balance: metal cylinder: 21.35g Single Pan Balance: Cell phone: 92.97 g , graduated cylinder: 47.62g 2nd Single Pan Balance: Cellphone: 92.98g 3rd Single Pan Balance: Cell phone: 92.98g
