Assignment title: Command Qualities
P3 - Explain the skills and personal qualities required for command and
control.
P4 - Explain how an individual can exercise command and control.
M2 - Assess the skills required for given practical command and control
scenarios and compare these to own performance.
Qualities
Being in command in a public service means that you need to possess certain
skills and qualities in order to be successful and gain the respect you need to
be a leader. A skill is something that you learn to do over a period of time but
a quality is something that your naturally born with, it is a part of your
personality that you work with and develop on as you get older. The
difference between the two being one is learnt in an educational environment
and one you bring with you as part of you natural abilities. Qualities of
somebody in command often include things such as confidence, responsible,
determination, a good role model and decisiveness. It is important for a
commander to have confidence as if you are working as part of a team or
leading a team, you must be somebody that can be relied upon and be
confident to make your own judgments when it comes to decision making. An
example of this used in the public services is when in the army, the captain or
lieutenant will have to make quick life changing decisions when their squad is
being fired upon, at this moment they will have to formulate a plan and give
direct orders to their privates in order to keep them alive. If they were not
confident in their decisions it could cost the lives of their team members as
they did not make a distinctive decision fast enough.
Another important quality which links to having confidence is taking
responsibility. By being responsible your team are more likely to trust you and
the decisions you make, this will make it more easier to control them as they
already have faith in your decisions. Not only is it making responsible
decisions but it is taking responsibility for the actions which may not have
had the outcome they were hoping for. By doing this people will learn to
respect you and therefor make it easier to lead the team as they know that
you are making the best decision you can in a difficult situation. Having
determination is important as it makes you push beyond any resistance which
may be stopping you from doing something. By being determined you are
more likely to get things done more effectively and push yourself and others
to their full abilities. People respect a commander who has a lot of
determination as it inspires people to push themselves too.
Finally, a good quality of a commander is being a good role model. A good
role model sets high standards of accountability for themselves and their
behaviours. Being a good role model means being open to new ideas, think
about others, having a vision and communicating this to the team so people
know clearly what the plan is and being able to lead by example. Having
good command and control instils trust, loyalty, discipline, morale, motivation
and respect in the team. Having trust develops a strong belief in the leaders
