Description:

This course introduces students to the main concepts and methods of comparative
political analysis. Topics covered will include different types of governmental systems
and institutions, regime types, electoral systems and political parties, state-society
relations, political economy, nationalism, democratization, globalization, and other
types of political transformations. By examining several different countries, students
gain an understanding of the great diversity of political life and the many ways in which
politics affect citizens.


The midterm break is from February 25th to March 3rd.

, ATTENDANCE

Five percent of your overall grade will be based on your attendance. You will have to
sign in at the start and the end of each class in order to get your attendance grade. No
other provisions will be provided. If you have to miss a class because of a documented
medical or family emergency, your attendance grade will be pro-rated.

IN-CLASS QUIZZES

There will be 11 in-class quizzes on the days specified in the syllabus. Each quiz is worth
1% of your final grade and each quiz will be based on the material covered in the
previous class. For example, quiz 1 will take place in class on January 17 and it will cover
the material that was assigned and discussed in class on January 10. The format of the
weekly quizzes will vary (multiple choice, short answer, identification etc). There will be
no individual supplemental quizzes provided under any circumstances. If you have to
miss a quiz because of a documented medical or family emergency, your grade will be
pro-rated. In order to calculate your total quiz grade, I will take into account your best
10 quizzes.


MID-TERM EXAMINATION
The mid-term exam will take place in class on February 21st. The mid-term results will
be returned to students on March 7th.
