Course Rationale: ( 994 words)
For this assignment I have decided to use two different syllabus types being the Skills-
based Syllabus as well as the Topic-based Syllabus.
The skills –based will be aimed at the abilities that the student needs and requires to
achieve the desired outcome. These needs were mentioned by the student in the student
interview as well as the questionnaire the student filled out. I will be covering all the
aspects of English in the course being reading, writing, listening and speaking , grammar
will also be included. The lessons will include listening to selected articles and this will
also include gist listening as well as words which would be used in the work environment.
The topic-based syllabus will be including the student’s information from the
questionnaire and interview that was completed and done before the course was being
prepared. It will include some of the topics of interest that were mentioned, by selecting
the student interests, the student should be more motivated and have a greater desire to
participate in the lesson as well as in the homework handed out to complete for the
following lesson.
The topics that I have selected were decided upon from what the student had said in his
interview as well as his questionnaire answers. The topics will cover words that are used
in the work place and they will better his business English as well as his confidence when
communicating with work colleagues. I have also used authentic material for all the
lessons and some lessons also include the student’s interests being football and the
environment / current affairs. There is also humour included in the lessons, which he
mentioned he would also like to have in the lessons.
The reason I have chosen this target language / skill is , once again , it is what was in the
original interview / questionnaire answers , with him stating that he want to improve his
L2 in order to better his job prospects in Leeds in the field that he has studied being
industrial engineering .
He also enjoys spending time with his English (L1) friends and wants to improve his
communication skills with them.
The rationale behind the structure of the course, e.g. why is it in this order? The Reason
for this order is what the course study material suggested although I could not actually
find a course book that related to this type of syllabus .( searched many web sites) ,
choosing the skill and topic based syllabus was because what his needs and aims were .
The course that I have planned will cover his needs and aims in the areas that he had
selected as being important to him , these being speaking, listening, writing , grammar
etc. I have tried to cover some of these in the first 5 lessons of the entire package that he
has chosen.
How the course will meet the learner’s needs, with the lessons, I have decided to select
work as the topic for the first lesson. This lesson will focus on listening and speaking and
there is a short video on
10 phrasal verbs used in the work place which will be watched and then discussed, I will
also CCQ him to confirm his understanding of the work covered in the lesson. There will
