D2 – Summarise ways of improving their own communication and interpersonal skills in
future interactions

The group interaction

During the group interaction a lot went well, everyone asked different questions as we had
we had prepared them before the actual interaction, we were all confident in asking them
and felt satisfied with the replies Mrs Jerwood gave. However, this could have been
improved with the questions being more in depth and having more than one question each,
but there was not enough time in the lesson for this. To improve the quality of the nurses
response she could have been more clear with what she meant as she used examples which
did come across as a little bit confusing.

During the group interaction I sat at an angle towards the nurse to show my interest and
that I was listening to her, I also had open posture to make sure she knew I wasn’t anxious or
nervous around her and my classmates. Although to improve my posture I could have not
folded my arms. I did this because I felt quite uncomfortable because I was sitting so close to
my classmates. While asking this question I also leaned forward but not too much, this
showed that I was interested to hear her answer, I did make eye contact with the nurse to
show that my attention was on the message she was conveying. I think that maybe I looked
at her too much as not only did I give her eye contact while answering my question but I did
when she was answering everyone else’s question. Other than folding my arms I also had
rather relaxed body language to show that I wasn’t in a rush or worried at all.

As we were aware that Mrs Jerwood is the only nurse on the school site, we had to ensure
the teachers knew where she was, so we kept the class room phone on and she had her
mobile with her. This was a potential barrier but it was necessary. In the end her phone did
go off but it wasn’t an emergency so she stayed in the room with us and then went to see
the student after our interaction. But this did make me feel as though the interaction was a
little bit rushed. To overcome this barrier there should have been another teacher on site
who was trained in first aid, preferably the deputy nurse so then Mrs Jerwood could have
relaxed a little bit more and made our interaction a little less rushed. Another barrier was
that when she first sat down there was a bit of an awkward silence which soon faded as we
all began to feel more comfortable when we started asking questions. To overcome this we
