P2 – Outline how legislation, policies and procedures relating to health, safety and
security influence health and social care settings

A policy is “a definite course or method of action selected (by government,
institution, group or individual) from among alternatives and in the light of given
conditions to guide and, usually, to determine present and future decisions.” 1 An
example of this in a health and social care setting such as a hospital could be the
Uniform Policy. The policy was has a version 2 which applies to each practitioner it
was issued 29th July 2013 which states that all practitioners have to wear uniforms
which meet the criteria which is set by the NHS, some of the things would include;
“uniforms should allow sufficient hip and shoulder movement for the safe moving
and handling requirements of the job.”2 But the NHS also requires the practitioner’s
uniforms to be smart, safe and practical and should provide the wearer with mobility
and comfort. There is also a policy made to ensure that practitioners wear the
correct shoes, the NHS expect the practitioners to wear sensible plain and low heel
shoes which are closed toe as well as closed at the back to ensure that there is less
chance of them falling or injuring themselves as well as to ensure that if the patients
bodily fluids were to go on the floor there would be a very little chance that it would
have an impact on the practitioner.
Another policy is the Data Protection policy, this was introduced in 1998. This was
made to ensure that a health and social setting is able to provide adequate security
measures to protect personal data and information as well as making sure it is
accurate, to ensure this there is a nominated officer who is responsible for data
protection compliance and they would then make sure all information is safe and
that staff are aware of good practice. The data protection act has eight principles
which are “personal data shall be processed fairly and lawfully, personal data shall be
obtained for one or more specified and lawful purposes and shall not be further
processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose or other purposes.”3
