M1 – Describe the roles and responsibilities relating to health, safety and security of
individuals in a health and social care setting

Within a health and social care setting such as a hospital there are many people
which are involved with the overall health, safety and security. The health
practitioners have a duty to ensure that the setting that they work in on a daily basis
is safe and secure, this is ensured by having enough people working at the same time
in order for the setting to be kept clean and tidy to avoid anyone becoming injured,
this means that all health practitioners have to work in a team with cleaners, porters
and the management for this to work. The practitioners use acts such as maintaining
confidentiality, respecting individual beliefs and wishes as well as giving them privacy
which results in the service users feeling comfortable and safe in the environment.

The cleaners within a hospital have a very important role in keeping the setting safe
for people to work and for others to be treated. There are a lot of cleaning fluids
which are used and could potentially be very dangerous to the people within the
setting, this means that the cleaners have the responsibility of using these fluids
carefully and making sure that they are out if reach of children as the consequences
could be fatal. They would also have to ensure that when they are doing their job
that it is done efficiently as if the ward is not cleaned thoroughly this could result in
the spread of infection which could cost the NHS a lot of money.

The patients would also have to work alongside the hospital staff, they would do this
by washing their hands after using the toilet or commode and before and after they
eat. They should also keep their room as tidy and clutter free as possible so that the
cleaning staff can access all the surfaces and floor areas to clean properly. “If a
patient has any wounds, they should not touch them or take off dressings themselves
because a staff member is the only one who should do this, also to make sure that
the hospital is kept clean the service users should immediately report it to a
practitioner”1 so that it can be resolved as soon as possible, a service user shouldn’t
share personal items or equipment, particularly toiletries with other patients
