M1 – describe stereotypical perceptions of life stages and their possible effect on
development.
A stereotype is a fixed idea or image which categorises people. It is usually based on
likes and dislikes, gender, race, age or ethnicity.
Adolescence stereotyping
Teenagers are often stereotyped as chavs or thugs that always wear hoodies and
trainers, they are also stereotyped as being moody and being part of big groups who
cause trouble, when not all teenagers are like this. Teenagers also e stereotyped as
having an addiction to technology. These stereotypes of teenagers stick with them
and makes it very hard to make a positive first impression. A lot of teenagers get
angry with being stereotyped continuously so sometimes they play up to the name
and become exactly what people want them to.
 Physical effects
Teenagers usually get stereotyped by their appearance and choice of friends. This
could cause them to try and change the way they act and who they really are,
causing their self-esteem to drop dramatically, therefore they are left to feel
uncomfortable and unhappy with who they’ve become. They may also miss out on
opportunities as they may feel like they won’t be accepted by others, this could
prevent them from forming relationships with others which could result in finding it
hard to trust others. teenagers may find a way of coping whether that be talking
about their problems, eating too much unhealthy foods, therefore putting on weight
and having a higher chance of becoming obese. Or not eating enough which could
lead to them becoming weaker. Teenagers may also feel like the only way out is to
harm themselves which could lead to other serious health related conditions.
 Intellectual effects
Stereotyping adolescents can have a huge effect on their education. As stereotyping
is very common in schools, teenagers may feel so uncomfortable they begin to hate
school therefore they are less likely to attend school so they aren’t learning anything.
Adolescents may also feel like they cannot join groups or have friends with different
interests as they will be judged far too much. A lot of adolescents have the capability
of succeeding in school, however, some do not want to as they don’t want to be
