P4: Write an informative leaflet that explains two theories of ageing
Kim Kardashian is 36 years old ; she is in the life stage of adulthood.
Disengagement
If Kim was to disengage herself would be taking herself away from society. She
would lose interest in socialises and any person relationships as she ages. She
would most likely do this because her physical health could decline and there is a
loss of social opportunities. This disengagement theory was developed by Elaine
Cumming and Warren Earl Henry in 1961. This is the theory that elderly people will
withdraw themselves from society and cut their contact with others. They will reduce
their their physical health and by cutting off contact with others, it will lose her
amount of social opportunities.
Issues that could limit social interaction include:
Ill health could affect the amount of social interaction Kim experiences, her mobility
may suffer, it could make it difficult for her to go out and meet her friends. If Kim's
hearing got worse or she lost it then she may find it more difficult to put herself into
social interactions. It may make her feel self conscious, that those she is interacting
with may get frustrated having to talk very clearly so that she can lip read. This may
then lead to her interacting less because she feels people may get annoyed,
therefore this limits the amount of social interaction she has.
Geographical mobility is another issue that could affect the amount of social
interaction Kim has as she gets into the retirement age stage. Geographical mobility
is when people retire away from their family and friends. Some families may move
away from places where there are ageing populations as they do not provide as
good housing or opportunities for employment. If Kim’s family and friends move
away this could socially isolate her ,especially if she can’t drive or public transport
links are poor.
Another issue that could limit social interactions is retirement. It would mean less
contact with colleagues at work who she may socialise with outside work. Being
retired can limit the amount of social interaction someone can have. They will no
longer be around a lot of people regularly who they usually interact with. People who
are still at work may not make, or have the time to see their retired colleagues.
Intellectually, if Kim was to become disengaged as she ages, she may be more likely
to develop cognitive difficulties such as dementia. Not working the brain and doing
cognitive exercises such as reading and crossword puzzles could be a cause of this.
However, if Kim was to exercise to her brain often then her brain would be less likely
to deteriorate and it could prevent it from doing it as quick.
Emotionally, Kim may feel lonely because she may lose a lot of social interaction
with many people as she enters retirement she is not with people in the workplace.
She may not see her family or friends as much if she moves too. As she ages her
family ages too ,so grandchildren might not visit as much .Not seeing these people
could make her feel isolated and possibly depressed because she may feel lonely.
