M1 - Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of an
individual.
The individual I will be discussing and evaluating is Kim Kardashian and she is 36
years old.
Theorists have argued that we are born to be the way we are (nature) and others
argue that it is the way we are brought up and influenced by our surroundings that
makes us the way we are (nurture). This argument is called the nature-nurture
debate.
Kim Kardashian has been influenced by nature because she has a coeliac disease.
This could be because her mother has it, so she passed it on through genetics.
Celiac disease is one where gluten causes the body’s immune system to attack the
lining of the small intestine. The small intestine then becomes damaged and Kim’s
body could therefore find it more difficult to absorb vitamins and minerals. This could
then leave Kim with problems such as diarrhoea, anemia and osteoporosis.
Another factor that has been influenced by nature for Kim is foetal alcohol syndrome.
This is because during pregnancy, Kim’s mother drank alcohol and this gave a
negative effect on her development before birth as it can affect the child mentally and
physically. It has affected her mentally because she has ADHD which is a medical
condition that has affected how well Kim can sit still, focus and pay attention. This
has been recognised by doctors and is now controlled with medication, however
wasn’t recognised until she was in her later years of childhood and the condition had
already affected her performance at school and relationships with adults and other
children.
However, Kim has also been influenced by nurture throughout her life because she
grew up in poor quality of housing. This has lead to problems such as as dampness
causing infections, poor heating and ventilation, a high crime rate in her area and
stress. The dampness in the house that she lived in growing up caused her to have
poor health. When she was younger, it caused a medical condition called
bronchiectasis. This is a lung condition where the bronchi (breathing tubes) in the
lungs have been damaged.
Kim was bullied throughout high school, nurture. This involved verbal insults, being
left out/excluded and receiving criticisms that put her down. Being bullied lead to
Kim’s school work being interfered with. This is because she constantly had it on her
mind. Receiving the constant criticisms made her feel demotivated, so she stopped
trying in school because she didn’t feel as though she could do well enough. This
then led to her grades lowering and overall didn’t do well in her final school exams
because she lost her motivation.
I believe the biggest influence on Kim’s development is nature because it has
caused medical conditions such as a celiac disease. It is difficult to live with as you
have to constantly check if food has gluten in it, which could become annoying to
