P1: Describe the key aspects of Public Health strategiesKey aspect one in a Public Health strategy involves monitoring the
health status of the population. This involves recording health summaries
of the population for a certain area, from this the world health
organisation will be able to infer potential problems from that area's
population. For example Calderdale’s health summary, recorded in 2015
showed that their hospital stays for alcohol related harm has risen above
the national averages.
The world health organisation concerns international public health. They
set norms and standards for health and they also monitor the health
situation of the public by assessing health trends and information
regarding the national and international population’s health. From this the
WHO can compare the similarities and differences between various
countries.
Another agency that does this nationally in the UK is Public health
England, they produce a yearly health profile report for all towns and
cities. Halifax's report from 2015 showed that there are issues with
deprivation, children in poverty, long term unemployment, alcohol related
hospital stays, life expectancy in males and females, smoking related
deaths, under 75 cardiovascular diseases, under 75 cancer rates.
Key aspect two in a Public Health strategy involves identifying the health
needs of the population. This involves identifying which services need to
be integrated and improved based on the trends and patterns that have
been established. For example the health summary for Calderdale showed
that there needs to be more staff integrated into the services that involve
helping those with alcohol related stays in the hospital. It also shows that
there needs to be s system that can help those who are alcoholics such
as alcoholics anonymous as it could prevent the amount of these hospital
stays.
Key aspect three in a Public Health strategy involves developing
programmes to reduce risk and screen for disease early on. This is the
attempt to reduce levels of ill health by introducing new programmes that
identify people as being ‘at risk’ of a condition and engaging hem in
preventative programmes. For example, a doctor identifying that
someone is at risk of developing liver or kidney damage due to their
alcohol addiction and referring them to a programme that supports them
to quit.
Key aspect four in a Public Health strategy involves controlling
communicable disease. This is an attempt to reduce the impact of
infectious diseases through immunization and other control measures. For
example, there are vaccinations available for the prevention of measles,
