Security Measures

P3 – Describe the types of security measures used in maintaining the security of people, premises and
property in the public services for a specific building.

M3 – Explain how each of these types of security operate together to contribute to the maintenance of
the security of people and property for a specific building.

When looking at the physical security of people, premises and property there are different types of
security measures which can be put into place. The main types of security include; perimeter fencing,
lighting, door locks, window locks, key management procedures, physical patrols, CCTV, control of entry
and exit, property marking and security surveys. In this assignment I will be looking at the security
measures which may be needed to maintain the security of people, property and premises in South
Essex College, Ground Floor.

Perimeter Fencing

Perimeter fencing is a structure which circles the perimeter of an area to prevent people from getting in
or out. These fences are usually metal bars with spikes or barbed wire on top to prevent climbing.
Fences are commonly used as they can be a cheap way of preventing someone from accessing your
property. The advantages of having a perimeter fencing include cutting down on entry points, this
means that there is usually only one way in and out. Another one is that it makes the boundaries clear
and visible so that it deters anyone who would try and get round it. Although they are cheap and this
can be an advantage for people who do not want to spend a lot of money, they are not durable and in
the future may need replacing. The atrium uses perimeter fencing as a form of security as surrounding
the college is a metal fence with spikes. This is important when providing security at a college as it
stops others from trying to use other windows or doors as a form of entry and keeps the pupils in the
college safe.

Lighting

Lighting is a security measure use as a preventative and corrective measure which may be provided to
detect or deter intruders. It can be counterproductive as it makes it difficult to see into other areas.
Lighting often needs to be used with another form of security measure such as door locks, CCTV or
physical patrols as it will just light up the way and make it easier for intruders if other methods are not
used. Lights can deter people who do not want to be seen this could make them reconsider their plan
and not want to go into that area, censored lights are the best option for this. Lights are automatic and
do not people controlling them all day so this makes them easy to maintain and affordable. Although it
has many advantages it also has a few disadvantages, some stated above. It needs to be used
alongside other methods, this could then make it an expensive security measure, electrical faults could
occur which means they would then have to pay out for them to be fixed or any instalment of new
lights. There are no form of censored lighting on floor one, they are all switched on manually, censored
lights may not be an ideal security measure for a college as they would be constantly switching on and
off with the amount of people who enter and exit the building. This could make it quite expensive as the
constant switching on and off could blow the bulbs quicker.

Door Locks

Door locks come in all different sizes and styles and they are used to secure private areas and private
property. There are many advantages of having a door lock as they can restrict people from entering a
place as well as stopping somebody from getting out. Door locks slow down intruders as they have to
find a way around the lock or a way to open the door without being detected. Key code locks make it
hard for people to enter as only certain people know the combination and they are very difficult to
guess. Depending on the type of lock you are looking for means that the price varies from cheap to
expensive, the most expensive being the most useful. The only disadvantages to locks is that if you
lose the key it can be opened or replicated by anyone, if you forget the combination you yourself
cannot get into it. The doors on the classrooms on the first floor can be locked to secure what is inside
the classrooms such as computers and peoples belongings. The entrance doors are electrical and can
be shut using a system inside the college. There are also fire exit doors which can only be opened from
the inside. This makes it hard for people to get in as they have no handle, key locks and a fire alarm
which will be activated when they are opened. It is important to secure and lock all the doors on the
