Psychology – memory
Types of long-term memory:
The three types of long – term memory are:
 Semantic memory
 Episodic memory
 Procedural memory
Semantic memory:
The semantic long-term memory store, contains our shared general knowledge of the
world. It has been likened to a dictionary or encyclopaedia. It includes knowledge of
things and is concerned with, ‘knowing that’. E.g. ‘when is Halloween?’, and ‘who wrote
Harry Potter?’.
The semantic memory is associated with the meaning of words. Semantic memories are
not time-stamped (we don’t usually remember the first time we heard about a specific
film). Semantic memory is less personal and more about the facts we all share.
Semantic memory is less vulnerable to distortion and forgetting, compared to episodic
memory.
Episodic memory:
Episodic memory refers to the ability to recall events from our lives. The episodic
memory has been likened to a diary (personal experiences). E.g. first crush or first
memory. These memories are complex.
Episodic memories are time-stamped, so you will remember when they happened and
what happened. Episodic memories also store information about how events relate to
each other in time.
An episodic memory, of a single episode, will include several elements e.g. people,
places and behaviour.
You will have to make a conscious effort to recall episodic memories. E.g. you are aware
you are searching for them.
Procedural memory:
Our procedural memory is our memory for actions or skills, basically how we do things.
We can recall these memories without conscious awareness or much effort, through
repetition and practice e.g. driving a car. Procedural memories are not time-stamped.
Procedural memories are the sort of skills you might find quite hard to explain to
someone else.
