Working memory model – a representation of short-term memory. The WMM refers to
the bit of information you are using, whilst working on a complex task, which requires
you to store information as you go along.
The Working Memory model: The model consists of four main components:

Central Executive




Episodic
Visuo-Spatial Phonological
Buffer
Sketch pad loop

Inner Scribe Phonological
and visual store

Articulatory
Long-term Memory control
system



Central Executive:
 The central executive has a, ‘supervisory role’.
 It monitors incoming data.
 Focuses and divides our limited attention.
 Allocates subsystems to tasks.
 CE has very limited capacity and does not store information.
Phonological Loop:
The Phonological Loop is the component of the Working Model that processes
information in terms of sound (acoustic). The phonological loop is divided into:
 Phonological store – stores the words you hear.
 Articulatory control system – allows maintenance rehearsal (repeating sounds in
a loop). The capacity of this loop, is believed to be 2 seconds worth of what you
can say.
Episodic Buffer:
 The episodic buffer is a temporary store for information.
 The EB combines visual, spatial and verbal information from other stores.
 The EB maintains a sense of time sequencing (record events).
 Storage component of the central executive.
