The musculoskeletal system helps to provide your body heat. Heat energy is a by-product of muscle
contraction. “70% of our body heat is produced by energy composed in muscle tissue.” (Maya U. and
Fiorella R., online)

Your bones produce and store both yellow and red bone marrow. Your yellow bone marrow creates
and produces lipids, your red bone marrow makes and produces thrombocytes (platelets),
erythrocytes (red blood cells) and leukocytes (white blood cells). Platelets are the red blood cells
which helps your blood to clot when needed. For example, when you have a cut from a knife,
platelets help to thicken your blood to stop the gash from bleeding. Erythrocytes are the cells in your
blood which carry oxygen around the cardiovascular system through your veins, arteries or blood
vessels. Leukocytes are the cells in your blood which help your body to fight infections by fighting or
digesting pathogens, different types of leukocytes do different things. Your bone marrow helps to
protect against issues in your blood, like leukaemia. Leukaemia is a type of cancer where the yellow
bone marrow produces abnormal blood cells, there are many different types of leukaemia and they
are all different issues with different types of blood cells. (Macmillan, 2017, online) Your bone
marrow may help someone’s treatment of leukaemia because a leukaemia patient needs to have the
abnormal blood cells removed to help them feel better and to do this a stem cell transplant, also
known as a bone marrow transplant, has to take place. A stem cell transplant is where a bone
marrow or stem cell donation, which must match or be like the patient’s tissue type, is transplanted
into the leukaemia patient. (NHS, 2018, online)
