Chapter 3 - USDA Government Inspected (Ch.10): Q&A

Were meatpackers business visionaries or a threat to the public health whose
industry required public regulation? ✔️Ans - ...

Teddy Roosevelt ✔️Ans - Any thing he did, he did it with
enjoyment/enthusiasm. If being the best meant being President he would not
stop short of the White House. As a child he was sickly, asthmatic & near-
sighted. Kept his body in shape was well as his mind. Attended Harvard. Won
presidency in 1904. Won Nobel Peace Prize for bringing end to Russo-
Japanese War. His skills as a leader were challenged by the publication of The
Jungle. But he embodied the temperament of Progressive reformers. He was
never a diehard conservative who railed against change.

The Jungle ✔️Ans - This 1906 work by Upton Sinclair pointed out the
terrible abuses of the meat packing industry. It related the conditions packers
processed pork and beef, tainted it and then shipped it to millions of American
people. 25,000 copies were sold in the first week. Instead of grasping the
socialist message, readers were more concerned about the corrupt meat
inspectors and unsanitary slaughterhouses. The book led to the passage of the
1906 Meat Inspection Act.

Upton Sinclair ✔️Ans - Author of The Jungle. He was a reformer & socialist

Reformer ✔️Ans - a person who wants to improve society

Socialist ✔️Ans - Believed to be a dangerous people who held extreme and
impractical opinions

What lead to the Meat Inspection Act of 1906? ✔️Ans - The publication of
The Jungle in 1906 by Upton Sinclair and the Eiropean governments in 1870
began to ban what they found to be unhealthy American products. American
exports declined. 1891 worried packers persuaded Congress to pass a federal
meat-inspection act in order to win back foreign customers. We don't know if
this book could have sparked widespread controversey. There are no opinion
pollf from 1906 to measure public opinion. The Jungle was mearly the last
straw in a long train of unfavorable stories about the packers.
