2.1. Suggest the most appropriate generic software process model that might be used as a basis
for managing the development of the following systems. Explain your answer according to the
type of system being developed:
A system to control antilock braking in a car
Due to the context of the system being safety, crucial planning and analysis must be done prior to
implementation. Therefore, the waterfall model would be appropriate, this is due to the nature of
completing a process before progressing. As a result, the implantation would not begin until the
planning, designing and any analysis or documentations is complete which will ensure the system is
safe to use.
Virtual reality system
This is a system where the requirements will change and there will be an extensive user interface
components. Incremental development with, perhaps, some UI prototyping is the most appropriate
model. An agile process may be used.
University accounting system
This is a system whose requirements are fairly well-known and which will be used in an environment
in conjunction with lots of other systems such as a research grant management system. Therefore, a
reuse-based approach is likely to be appropriate for this.
Interactive travel planning system
System with a complex user interface but which must be stable and reliable. An incremental
development approach is the most appropriate as the system requirements will change as real user
experience with the system is gained.
, 9.1. Explain how advances in technology can force a software subsystem to undergo change or
run the risk of becoming useless.
A software subsystem is a unit which is part of a larger system. As technology advances, systems and
subsystems can become outdated and as a result be the cause of any software changes. This
software evolution is maintaining the system and therefore can degrade the structure from the
changes made. Technology advancements range from changes in framework or hardware and
systems must keep up due to competitive pressures. Other organisations or businesses may be
developing and advancing their systems to the most up to date technologies to gain a competitive
advantage. As a result, it is crucial to maintain and change systems and subsystems as technology
advances, however, keeping up with the advancements in technology and modifying the software
the system changes costs increase. Therefore, this increases the risk of a software subsystem to
progress from software evolution, to software servicing. This stage is when the system or subsystem
has essential changes made and still used until the software retirement stage as it eventually
become useless and deemed redundant, taken out of use.
