Alice: Learning Aim D

Introduction
As a service provider, it is important to be aware of a variety of professional roles. This is
because they will need to communicate with other professionals in order to share information
and support the individual. As all the professionals expertise in different areas, the
individual's needs would not be met if they didn't communicate with others. This is because if
the GP did not communicate with the nutritionist or specialist consultant, then they would be
aware of the progress that has been made within her health so they will be unsure on what
to give Alice in terms of medication or advice. This shows how service providers need to be
aware of the variety of professionals as they need to share information to track the
individuals progress and meet their needs.

DP6: Why does meeting this person's needs take more than one health care
professional?
Alice needs more than one healthcare professional as she needs support in different areas
of expertise. Although healthcare professionals work in the same field of work overall, they
expertise in different areas, such as the bereavement counsellor helping her with her grief.
Alice needs help with her medication, bereavement, liver function, nutritionist and housing
arrangements. As a result, one healthcare professional will not be knowledgeable and
qualified in all these areas. Therefore, Alice will need access to all these healthcare
providers in order for all of her individuals needs to be met and to be supported in everything
she needs help with.

DP7: Which healthcare professionals are involved in their care? What do they each do
for the individual?
Alice has a range of healthcare professionals involved in her care. Firstly, the GP, nutritionist
and specialist consultant all work with Alice to discuss her health and figure out a way to
improve her health, such as prescribing medication or offering support. The alcoholics
anonymous group leader helps Alice with starting her recovery of her addiction to alcohol.
The bereavement counsellor is involved in Alice's emotional care and helping her get over
the death of her husband by receiving support in dealing with her issues and rescuing her
need for medication. The centre manager and advocate work with Alice to help her express
her needs and find the best solution for her. Finally, the representative from the housing
association helps Alice by seeing if she'd benefit from sheltered accommodation and
arranges a meeting with her and the advocate to discuss this. Therefore, this shows the
range of healthcare professionals and the diversity within the ways they provide care and
support for Alice.

DP8: How do each of these professionals communicate with each other? What laws
are there to protect information? What systems are in place to help communicate
within the laws?
The healthcare professionals communicate with each other throughout meetings, emails or
phone calls. It is important that the professionals communicate with each other as they need
to share information on the individual in order to offer them the correct support and
treatment. There are several laws that healthcare professionals need to remember when
caring for patients and handling their personal data. Firstly, the data protection act of 2018
was put in place to protect personal information, which is held securely only with consent
and only shared on a ‘need to know’ basis, such as if the individual was in danger. The
mental health act of 2007 also applies to Alice as she suffers from depression. This act is
designed to give healthcare professionals the right to detain, assess and treat people with
mental disorders in the interests of their health and safety or for public safety. This applies to
Alice as if her depression was to get out of hand and she became a danger to herself or
others, the healthcare professionals would be able to detain her until she is well enough to
