AP1: How is equality illustrated in the case study?
Equality is illustrated in the case study under many different examples. Firstly, despite
Nusrat's learning difficulties making it harder for her, she is allowed to join in the dance and
drama activities as the team have put together Makaton sheets for her to use. This is an
example of equality as she is being treated with equal opportunities, despite her differences.
Another way in which Nusrat is provided with equal opportunities is the equal access she
has to healthcare providers and services, such as the centre, GP and specialist nurse
practitioner. This is equality as she has equal access with her healthcare accessibility and
support. At the community centre, Nusrat is provided with a care plan which focuses on her
abilities rather than her disabilities. This means she is treated with equal opportunities as the
centre is aware of things, she can do rather than the things she cannot do independently,
meaning she has the equal opportunity of doing some things independently. However, there
are also some examples where Nusrat has to be treated with inequality to support her
wellbeing, such as having a volunteer to support her when going to the toilet to ensure her
epilepsy is monitored and support her if it was to become uncontrolled. This shows how
equality has been applied to Nusrat's case study, but has also been avoided, in order to
support her health and wellbeing.

It is important for Nusrat to be treated with equality as she may feel like because of her
learning difficulties and disability, she will be unable to join in on activities. Therefore, by
allowing her to join in on things such as dancing and drama class, she will not feel like she is
at a disadvantage. Furthermore, this will make her feel more confident and less self-
conscious of her disability as she won’t feel like it's holding her back from participating in
things with everyone else. In addition, if Nusrat is treated with equality within making
decisions about her own life, she will feel as though although she has difficulties, she is still

a diverse group of healthcare professionals and individuals to help her. For example, the
volunteers at the centre, advocate, her mother, the GP and the specialist nurse are a diverse
group of individuals who play different roles in order to support Nusrat. Secondly, there are
diverse ways in which the Makaton sheets are used to help Nusrat and allow her to join in on
the activity at the centre. The centre uses the Makaton sheets so Nusrat can join in on dance
and drama activities, and to create a friends list for Nusrat to avoid her trusting people who
she doesn’t know, due to her trustworthy nature. This is an example of diversity as there is a
range of ways in which the Makaton sheets are used to support Nusrat and overcome
challenges. There is also a diverse range of mechanisms the centre put in place to support

Healthcare providers need expertise in a specific area of work in order to support the
individual with the correct information and treatment. For example, Nusrat’s advocate
expertise in working with individuals with different needs. This is important as it means she is
able to help Nusrat express her needs in a way which suits Nusrat. The staff and volunteers
need expertise in understanding individuals' needs and being aware of Nusrat's right to have
a say in her decisions. This is important as it ensures the team knows that when a decision
is being made for Nusrat, she still has the right to have her say in it. Additionally, there is a
named person that Nusrat can go to if she has any concerns or becomes distressed. This
shows how the named person would have to have expertise in how to care for an individual
with different needs when they become distressed, as well as knowing how to emotionally
support Nusrat. Finally, the GP and specialist nurse practitioner need to have expertise in
epilepsy and how to manage it. Furthermore, the specialist nurse would have to have the
most expertise in how to improve Nusrat’s epilepsy management to ensure her control gets

Healthcare providers also need to possess personality characteristics in order to ensure they
are promoting equality and diversity. Firstly, there are skills and attributes that healthcare
providers need, such as teamwork. Teamwork is presented in Nusrat’s case study as the
staff and volunteers work together to help Nusrat and think of solutions, so she is treated
with equality for example, the team work together to create the Makaton sheets to ensure
Nusrat is treated with equal opportunities when participating in activities. Communication is
also used by the advocate as they help Nusrat express her needs, due to her struggle within
communicating. Communication is important within prompting equality as it ensures that
Nusrat has equal opportunities within expressing her wants, needs and wishes, even if this
means someone else is helping her communicate. Another personality characteristic present
in Nusrat’s case study is engendering trust, which is portrayed by Nusrat’s mother. This is
because her mother trusts the team to support Nusrat in the best way and meet all of her
individual needs. This also shows that the healthcare professionals possess the
characteristic of being trustworthy by providing Nusrat with the most applicable options and
care. Finally, problem solving is used when the Makaton sheets are used to create a friends
list as the centre are concerned she will attach herself to anyone who seems trustworthy.

confident whilst also ensuring she is safe.
