18AAS33 Fluid Mechanics assignment
Note: For all the questions you only need to submit 1 or 2 only the plots (Do not
share the code or the solution). You can use MATLAB if you have the license or
use GNU OCTAVE which is an open-source alternative to MATLAB. All relevant
information should be available on the plot, hence label the graphs properly.
1. A solid rectangular shaped plate with weight and surface area of 500 N and 0.5 m2 slides
down on a plane at an angle  to the horizontal. The velocity of descent is 10 m/s.
Dynamic viscosity of lubricating liquid is 0.1 N-s/m2 . Plot the thickness of the lubricant
as a function of .

2. Plot the rise height of the liquid in tube due to capillary effect with angle of contact .
The diameter of tube is 4mm, surface tension is 0.08 N/m, specific weight of liquid is
9810 N/m3 .

3. Plot the pressure variation with altitude (till 10 km) in the atmosphere with constant
density assumption, constant temperature assumption and no assumptions on the same
graph. Use the relevant sea level values of the fluid properties.

4. Inclined Venturimeter of inlet and throat diameters of 0.4m and 0.2m is carrying certain
liquid and is inclined upwards at angle  with the horizontal. Reading of the differential
u-tube manometer connected to the inlet and the throat, length of converging section
and coefficient of discharge are found to be 0.45m, 0.8m and 0.96m respectively. Specific
weight of water, specific gravity of mercury and specific gravity of liquid are 10 kN/m3,
13.65 and 1 respectively. Plot the discharge and throat pressure with  if inlet pressure is
65 kPa.
