CHILDREN’S LITERATURE I
- Choose 5 reasons for using storybooks.
-Stories exercise the imagination. Children can become personally involved in a story as they identify with the characters and try
to interpret the narrative and illustrations. This imaginative experience helps develop their own creative powers.
-Storybooks add variety and provide a springboard for creating complete units of work that constitute mini-syllabuses and involve
pupils personally, creatively and actively in an all-round whole curriculum approach. They thereby provide a novel alternative to
the coursebook.
-Learning English through stories can lay the foundations for secondary school in terms of learning basic language functions and
structures, vocabulary and language-learning skills
-Listening to stories helps children become aware of the rhythm, intonation and pronunciation of language.
-Stories are motivating, challenging and fun and can help develop positive attitudes towards the foreign language, culture and
language learning.

- Summarize the section labeled: storybooks and learning.
There are some ways to learn and teach. Firstly, there are stories that contain information about many subjects like Maths,
Science, History, Art… And with some books children can learn through a visual and fun way. Secondly, there are many strategies
in order to learn. Children start studying by themselves, also, they elaborate strategies for learning English, and they develop new
things they are able to do, for example organizing work. Thirdly, books can be used to reinforce some vocabulary like colors,
numbers, animals… Finally, many books mention other countries and cultures. If children read those stories from a young age,
they will accept classmates who are different. Thus avoiding racism and many problems. Furthermore, all students are different
and each one has their own needs. Therefore, the teacher will have to differentiate the needs of each person and teach in different
ways so that everyone learns.

- Explain the content of one book from Eric Carle and what content can we teach with it. 300 words
(remember your group work)
The name of the book is “1, 2, 3 to the zoo”, is a counting and picture book and the author is Eric Carle who has published other
books like “Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?”. This book is suitable for children who are in first grade or in preschool.
As this book is about numbers, animals, colors and is in english, it could be used in subjects such as mathematics for numbers,
natural science for animals, english for the key vocabulary of different topics or plastic for shapes and colors.
The book “1, 2, 3 to the zoo” is about a train that carries animals to the zoo. Each wagon transports a number of animals,
following the order from 1 to 10. In all pages a small mouse visits all the wagons and at the same time we can see and name all the
animals, also ordered from the biggest to the smallest. Finally they arrive at the zoo and we can see all the rest of the animals of the
zoo, they all appeared in the last page of the book.
With this book we can teach our students about the key vocabulary of animals like elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, lions…
Furthermore, it is a book that has no words, so children have to know the key vocabulary to be able to follow the book. Also, the
different sizes that they can have such as medium, big, small. Moreover, the numbers range from 1 to 10, because it is a counting
book and children will be able to find in the book the written number related to the animals that appear on each page. Finally,
they can relate the colors of the animals with those animals for example, the crocodile is green, the seal is gray, the lion is yellow…

, - Analyzing and comparing stories: the importance of showing different takes on a traditional tale: little Red
Riding hood or Three Little pigs.
We have watched different videos about different stories of Three Little Pigs, the first video is about the story called “The True
Story of the Three Little Pigs”, the second video is about the book called “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” and the
first video is about the story called “The Three Little Pigs”. About the three different stories, we can find some differences and
some similarities of the stories that we have already watched.
About the differences in “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs”, they died and the wolf ate them. The story is from the wolf’s
point of view and is a non-intentional story. Furthermore, the wolf was looking for a cap of sugar and cops and reporters
appeared. In “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig”, we find some differences like there is a pig and 3 wolves, the wolves
build a house together, the bad pig uses a hammer and dynamite. Finally, at the end of the book they all are friends. In “The
Three Little Pigs” story, Little Red Riding Hood kills the last pig.
About the similarity of all of them is that two houses are destroyed. The similarity between “The True Story of the Three Little
Pigs” and “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” is that it is a story about the modern world. The similarities between
“The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” and “The Three Little Pigs” are that there is intentional damage and dynamite is
used in order to destroy the houses. The differences between “The Three Little Pigs” and “The True Story of the Three Little
Pigs” are that three pigs appeared and only one wolf. The houses that they built are made of straw, sticks and bricks, also, only
two pigs died.

- Explain the 3 methods for teaching literacy in English. Phonics, whole lenguaje, and language experience
The three methods for teaching literacy in English are phonics, whole language and language experience.
About the first one, it focuses on letters and their sound-symbol relationship. Some phonics activities include some aspects like
identifying the number of syllables in a word, using predictable or patterned books, repeating chants with common letter-sounds,
sorting words that share a common letter-sound…
About the whole language, its approach begins with meaning and then uses language in context for further word or language
study.
Finally, the language experience is an approach that uses learners' oral language as the basis of a written story.

CHILDREN’S LITERATURE II
- How some materials can help children with literacy: Pete the Cat (sigh words, grammar structures, through
repetition and rhyme).
The video “Pete the Cat” will help the students for many reasons. The video uses music and songs to help remember the words
and is a question-answer and learning responses, too. Also, in the book different sizes and colors appeared for some important
words and highlighted words in order to help remember them. You can teach by repetition and the lunchbox is represented big so
that students can point at it every time it is mentioned.
With this story you can teach verbs, pronunciation by hearing the teacher say the words, places in a school , grammar related to
-ing, present continuous and some vocabulary of school.
In order to implement the reading, you can show the words to your students and after, while you read the book, whenever one of
the words comes up, make your students say it out loud. You can also tell the students to describe the pictures and with that,
