Characteristic features of the disorder (according to the DSM-5)
Criterion A: Characteristic symptoms
○ Two or more of the following, each present for a significant portion of tim
during a 1 month period (or less if successfully treated)
- Delusions: false beliefs.
- Hallucinations: abnormal perceptions.
- Disorganised speech: frequent derailment or incoherence.
- Grossly disorganised: dysfunctional daily life activities.
- Negative symptoms: affective flattening, alogia (disorganised speech), or avoliti
(when an individual presents with a lack of interest in doing things).
○ For a diagnosis, two Criterion A symptoms required for any diagnosis of
schizophrenia. The individual must have at least one of these symptoms:
delusions, hallucinations and disorganised speech. At least one of these "co
symptoms" is necessary for a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
Criterion B: Social/occupational dysfunction
- For a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, one or mo
major areas of functioning (work, interpersonal relationships) are below the leve
achieved prior to the onset.
- Decline in functioning over the 6 months.
Criterion C: Duration
- Signs persist for at least 6 months.
- 6 month period has to include at least one month of symptoms (or less is success
treated) that meet Criterion A.
Criterion D: Schizoaffective and major mood disorder exclusion
- These have been rules out because of either
○ No major depressive or manic episodes have occurred concurrently with th
active phase symptoms.
○ If mood episodes have occurred during active-phase symptoms, their total
duration has been brief relative to the duration of the active and residual pe
○ Neologisms: making up new words.
Criterion E: Substance/general mood condition exclusion:
- Disturbance isn't attributed to the direct physiological effects of substance (drug
or medication) or another medication.
