III SEMESTER B.Tech PREPARATORY EXAMINATION
FLUID MECHANICS
Time:3 Hours Maximum Marks:70
Instructions:
i. Answer any FIVE full Questions. Question number 1 and 2 are compulsory. Each question
carries 14 marks.
ii. Missing data may be suitably assumed.
1. a. Briefly Describe the following: 06
i. Capillarity
ii. Surface tension
iii. Compressibility
b. Prove that the pressure or intensity of pressure at a point in a static fluid is equal 08
in all directions (Pascal’s law).
2. a. A rectangular plane surface 3 m wide and 4 m deep lies in water in such a way that 06
its plane makes an angle of 30 with the free surface of water. Determine the total
o
pressure force and position of centre of pressure, when the upper edge is 2 m below
the free surface.
b. Derive the general continuity equation for the fluid flow in three dimensional 08
Cartesian coordinates.
3. a. Derive Euler’s equation of motion along a stream line and obtain Bernoulli’s 08
equation from Euler’s equation.
b. A 30 cm × 15 cm venturimeter is provided in a vertical pipeline carrying oil of 06
specific gravity 0.9, the flow being upwards. The difference in elevation of the throat
section and entrance section of the venturimeter is 30 cm. The differential U-tube
mercury manometer shows a gauge deflection of 25 cm. Calculate: (i) the discharge
of oil, and (ii) the pressure difference between the entrance section and the throat
section. Take the co-efficient of discharge as 0.98 and specific gravity of mercury
as 13.6
OR
4 a. Explain the principle of orifice meter with neat sketch. Derive the expression for 08
rate of fluid flow through it.
b. A pipe of diameter 400 mm carries water at a velocity of 25 m/s. The pressures at 06
the points A and B are given as 29.43 N/cm 2 and 22.563 N/cm2 respectively while
the datum head at A and B are 28 m and 30 m. find the loss of head between A
and B.
5. a. Derive the expression for the rate of fluid flow through Large rectangular orifice. 06
