Beethoven’s instrumental music – ETA Hoffman
Introduction
• Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffman: Born 1776 died 1822
• Loved Mozart
• Trained to be a lawyer, gifted musician, and artist
• Became fulltime musician, published musical essays
• Kreisleriana – 6 fantastical essays which relate to different compositions.
• Schumann was interested in these writings.
• Wagner influenced also.

• Music is the most romantic of all the arts. Object: the expression of the infinite
• Giving nature human characteristics. Anthropomorphising
Romanticism in music
• Later than art and literature; the post-Beethoven time c. 1830
• Continues into 20th century; the terms late-romanticism and neo-romanticism describe
later manifestations.
Why does periodization worry you?
• Different interpretations of history affect our view of how to play music
• Always be as honest as you can with your bias
• Periodization = there are different periods of music, and where they begin and end is not
agreed upon.
• Neo = return to something
• Minimalism in 20th century = neo
• E.g. Stravinsky Pilchanella Suite
• Schlegel and Paul first used term romanticism. They were writers. Term meant
spontaneity. G.H.F. Hegel: application of the term “Romantic” as if it implies the whole
time from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. He said history hasn’t started yet in Africa.
• Organicism = melody from which the entire piece is developed. Comes from the idea of
nature.
