Unit 1 Practice Brief:

Following a whirlwind romance and a short courtship Mr. and Mrs S have recently married. Mr. S has two children
from his previous marriage; a son David aged 16 and a 12 year old daughter, Katie.

Mr. S is a white British man who works as a Bank Manager in his local town. For some time now he has lived
beyond his means due to a passion for gambling and sports cars. At the moment Mr. S is very stressed. He was
recently called in to see his line manager as it has been discovered that for the last two years he has been making
fraudulent expense claims. This criminal activity was in an attempt to help fund his rather extravagant lifestyle and
to pay for his gambling debts. The bank is considering their options and may decide to report the matter to the
police.

Mr. S has been very depressed about the situation at work and has been taking this out on his wife. She has been
the victim of both verbal and physical abuse. Mrs. S does not dare tell anyone about this abuse. She was warned
not to marry Mr. S by many friends and family and does not want to be seen as a failure. Mr. S is also very
controlling and is preventing her from leaving the house on her own or from making any contact with her family
and friends.

Mrs. S was raised in India and moved to the UK 6 months ago. Attracted to his flamboyant lifestyle, she fell in love
with Mr. S and married him despite protests from her family. Mrs. S has been raised as a Hindu and her family are
furious that she has married a white British non-Hindu man. Her family are so opposed to the marriage that they
are arranging to have Mrs. S killed to prevent any further shame being brought on their family.

David, Mr. S’s son, is in his final year at School and has recently told his friends that he is homosexual. This is
now common knowledge within School and as a result he has been the victim of both physical and verbal bullying.
Recently, his problems at school have escalated, and he has received threatening and abusive emails and texts.
There is even a Facebook page containing homophobic comments about David and encouraging people to write
insults and derogatory comments.

As a result of all the difficulties within the family, Mr S.' youngest child, Katie, has been feeling very neglected and
has started to drink alcohol. A few days ago she was brought home by the police in a drunken state.
