P1 - Outline why children and young people may need to be
looked after away from their families:
P2 - Outline the arrangements for providing quality care for looked
after children and young people:
In this assignment I will talk about why children and young people may need to be
looked after but also I will outline the arrangements for providing quality care for
looked after children and young people. There are many reasons why children and
young people may need to be looked after away from their families.
One of the main reasons why children may be looked after away from their families is
because of the death of their parents. This is where the child would be sent to
fostering agencies where they would be looked after another family. Foster agencies
are specialised in looking after children and young adults who are unable to live on
their own yet, the reason for that might be because they might not have other
relatives which might take care of them or they might not simply be the legal age of
living on their own. The foster agency will find a temporary family for the child to live
with. This could involve a big family with many other children from foster care homes.
Those children who are unable to find foster families they might be sent to the
residential childcare this is where the child is going to be looked after by the carers.
Another reason why children may need to be looked after away from their families is
because of the parental illness or incapacity. This is when parent of the child is
unable to look after the child due to a particular illness e.g. they might’ve been
paralysed or certain parts of their body are not working. This could also involve
illnesses like mental health illnesses or emergency hospitalisation. If that happens
the child in that family could be sent to the foster care but also they might be sent to
adoption because child’s parent is unable to function properly. When the child is sent
to the foster care they would be kept there for a period of time until they have a
family willing to take them. Children and young adults who live in the foster care are
still able to receive full education and most of the children are assigned to go to the
local school which is close to the foster care.
Additional reason why children may need to be looked after away from their families
is because of the suspected or actual maltreatment. This is usually when the children
are inspected and sent to a care unit where they are looked after and possibly
prepared for adoption because if the parents have been abusive towards the child,
they have lost the rights to look after the child so it is important to find a family
which is going to treat the child right.
There might be other reasons which could result in the individual being sent to a
residential childcare is because they might have a health issue, but also something
like behavioural problems and learning difficulties. The child might also have a
disability. This suggests that the parents might not necessary be capable of taking
care of someone with health issues. This means that they still might be visiting the
child but the child mostly is going to live in child health care units where they work
