Unit 10 M2 Health and Social Care

M2 - Explain the roles and responsibilities of two members of the children’s
workforce in relation to look after children and young people:

In this assignment I have chosen two members of the children’s workforce whom I will
explain the roles and responsibilities of in relation to look after children and young
people. There are many members which I have looked at but the final ones which I
chose is the social worker and foster parents.

Social worker:

When talking about the social worker, his/her role is to interact with the child and the
family to ensure the positive service provision. Social worker is a very important role
in this situation, the reason for that because they help the family emotionally and
financially. A social worker has a direct contact with the family and the child. The
responsibility of the social worker is to find a home for a child who has to stay away
from their parents for a certain reasons. For example, the child might have to stay
with a foster family whilst the parents are in the prison.

The social worker is responsible for finding a temporary or a permanent foster family
for the child where they must be happy in. This suggests that the family they chose
for the child should be regularly checked but also the child’s opinion must be asked
too because if they are not happy in the foster family they’ve been assigned with then
maybe they have to be put into another family or stay at the residential childcare
until they are old enough to live on their own.

In this role, the social worker has to provide the child with a safe environment and
also emotional support for the child and the family. It is important to consider the
fact that the child might negatively consider the transition of the families as they
would be used to their own. There are cases when the foster care or the residential
childcare is just essential. For example, the parents might be suffering with a mental
health illness and are unable to look and care after the child.

This means that it would be beneficial for the child if they are sent to a foster care so
that they could develop their future. This increases child’s chances of having a decent
future. The social worker has to consider emotional breakdowns and but also the fact
that children might find it hard to adapt to change, especially when it comes to
changing people with who they have been with since they were born. They might be
used to have that constant presence of the family members so they might feel
negatively about living with strangers. It is an important step when choosing the right
family for the child. The social worker has to ensure that the family they chose for the
child, the child is going to be happy in it but could also continue with their ambitions
and goals in the future.
