P5 M4 – Unit 28– Applied Science

P5 – Examine the commercial importance of diferent types of isomers:
M4 – Discuss the chemical/therapeutc important of isomerism:

When it comes to isomerism, there are diferent ttpes of them. One of those ttpes is called
the structural isomerism.
Structural isomerism:
The wat in which isomers work is that thet have identcal molecular formula but the atoms
in the molecules tend to be arranged diferentlt. When it comes to structural isomerism the
arrangement of atoms would be placed in diferent wats. There could be diferent ttpes of
the structural isomerism, one of them is called the chain isomerism. The reason for the
chain isomerism taking place is due to the branched present in the carbon chains. Branched
chain isomers tend to have a lower boiling point compared to the straight chain molecules
because the straight chain molecules tend to have more surface area exposed which would
enhance the intermolecular forces, thet would be a lot stronger than the intermolecular
forces in the branched chain isomers. Below is an example of a chain isomerism with a
butane molecule. You can see that one of the molecules of butane is straight and the other
molecule is a branched one.

Another example of the chain isomer is a pentane molecule, there are total of three possible
chain isomers with pentane. The short structures of pentane can be seen below;

A diferent ttpe of structural isomerism is called the positon isomerism, in this the carbon
chain tend to stat the same, however, the other groups present in the molecule are
swapped around. AN example of a positon isomerism is having propane with bromine. It
can be placed on the end of the carbon chain and on the other molecule bromine can be
placed in the centre of the carbon chain. The wat in which the bromine would move is bt
having it being broken of and moved to the wanted positon, that would also involve the
movement of the htdrogen molecule to replace the original positon of the bromine atom.
The short structure of the bromopropane with positon isomerism can be seen below;
